As a prolific writer Narendra Luther has written 13 books and about 1000 articles. Some of his books have been translated into Hindi, Urdu, Telugu and Oriya. His books – Mohammad Quli Qutb Shah, the Founder of Hyderabad; Hyderabad – a Biography; Raja Deen Dayal; The Nocturnal Court; Lashkar- the Story of Secunderabad; & Rockscape of Andhra Pradesh are works of his living testimony to Hyderabad’s evolving history and culture. He is also a contributing author to the Jewels of the Nizam, The Power of Glory, Travel writing and the Empire, The Untold Charminar and Hyderabad Hazir Hai.
Narendra Luther holds First Class Honours in Economics and M.A. in Political Science, Punjab University, and Industrial Management from Leeds University. Starting his career in the IAS in 1955, he has held several important posts under the Government of India and AP, finally retiring as Chief Secretary of AP in 1991.
Narendra Luther is the winner of seven literary awards from different literary bodies of India for work on humour. He received the Chishti India Harmony Award in April 2016.
His autobiography A Bonsai Tree came out in September 2017
